Using large language models to interpret experimental evidence, design discriminating experiments and formulate well-supported mechanistic explanations remains a central challenge in materials research. Here we establish PSM-Bench, an 800-question benchmark developed by perovskite researchers to evaluate scientific reasoning in perovskite photovoltaics. We also introduce OpenPerov, an expert-informed language-model framework that learns from expert-calibrated evidence records reconstructed from 4,532 articles; these records link experimental strategies, controls and observations to mechanistic interpretations. Structured-evidence adaptation outperformed conventional question-answer training, and OpenPerov Flash ranked first among 13 closed-book systems. OpenPerov Pro raised Scientific Mastery further, from 87.6 to 89.1, by revising selected passages with retrieved evidence. On questions derived from subsequent studies, both models also outscored expert-authored answers. In an experimental test of self-assembled monolayer design, OpenPerov selected a K analogue that outperformed the Na analogue preferred by experts. Devices incorporating the selected contact reached a power…
Post-training quantization (PTQ) reduces the com putational cost of large language models (LLMs), but it can introduce internal structural and behavioral changes that are not captured by traditional metrics such as accuracy and per plexity. We present TopoQuant, a topological framework that uses topological data analysis (TDA) to quantify structural drift in self-attention weights and relate it to behavioral changes in quantized LLMs. Across four LLM families and multiple quantization levels, we show that topological drift remains stable at moderate compression levels but increases sharply below 4 bit precision, closely tracking declines in attention agreement. Our results reveal a strong relationship between topological drift and attention agreement, indicating that structural changes in model parameters closely reflect behavioral degradation under quantization. We further demonstrate that topological features can accurately predict attention consistency using lightweight machine learning models, achieving R2 scores of up to 0.85. Predicting attention agreement enables efficient assessment of be havioral consistency in quantized LLMs, allowing quantization induced degradation to…
LLM agents repeatedly return to a model to generate actions and interpret tool results, incurring repeated context processing and generation overhead. Yet a value needed to execute an action need not be observed by the model to generate that action. This distinction creates an optimization opportunity: reconsider where model decisions are necessary, together with the work performed between them. We present AgentPRO, a compiler framework for optimizing agent workflows as execution information becomes available. AgentPRO organizes planned duties, generation regions, and concrete operations in a hierarchical representation, distinguishing execution dependencies from observations required for generation. Region transformations combine compatible duties into fewer model requests, while operation transformations reduce redundant context and tool work. These scopes interact: eliminating a redundant read can remove an observation requirement that otherwise separates generation regions. AgentPRO coordinates transformations using initial plans, current observations, and historical execution profiles through just-in-time, adaptive, and profile-guided optimization. Extracting knowledge from large databases of experimental materials data requires repeated analyses and reusable records of their choices and results. We developed Multi-Agentic AI (MAA), a multi-agent system in which AI agents with distinct roles analyze experimental thermoelectric data under predefined instructions and quality checks, saving analysis records traceable to their sources. In four experiments varying theme and cycle counts, we measured what accumulated in these records. In the largest experiment (100 analyses across 10 themes and 10 cycles), concept co-occurrences were concentrated within themes, vocabulary was shared across themes and some relation descriptions were first detected in later cycles. A specialized AI that searches this experiment's knowledge bases and reads their analysis records answered materials questions with cited sources. Retrospective checks, including tracing an answer generated with a preliminary corpus back to the source data, exposed errors: traceability makes errors findable but not absent.
Accelerating modern foundational models has pushed domain-specific compilers toward increasingly complex, multi-tiered optimization pipelines. However, this heavy optimization focus introduces delicate tradeoffs between peak execution performance and correctness. Subtle codegen defects can trigger numerical degradation and memory or buffer corruption, invalidating multi-million-dollar training runs and degrading live serving quality without raising obvious compiler errors. In this paper, we present a battle-tested methodology for verifying and triaging Google's XLA:TPU compiler at hyperscale. We leverage fuzzing techniques, combining synthetic program generation with real production traces, while orchestrating AI agent swarms to autonomously generate stress tests, reproduce failures, and draft fixes. To pinpoint root causes in full workloads, we pair this with a hierarchical differential pipeline that bisects large graphs down to individual failing operations inside fused kernels. Deployed in production, our framework has already driven the resolution of over 142 compiler bugs (with 103 additional findings under review), from which we distill pragmatic lessons learned.
Engineering predictions require physical mechanisms to be translated consistently into equations, discretization, code, and validation, yet errors can propagate despite local checks. Artificial-intelligence (AI) agents automate scientific tasks, but coordinating and…
Bimanual interaction produces complementary tactile views of the same physical process, yet existing tactile representation learning largely models the two hands independently or combines them only for downstream prediction, leaving their cross-hand relationship unexplored. To…
As generative AI becomes increasingly used in anime-style image creation, distinguishing human-drawn, AI-inpainted, and text-to-image images is important for copyright attribution, visual provenance, and content governance. Existing AI-generated image detectors mainly target…
Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) constructs subword vocabularies through greedy pair merging, but conventional BPE requires the number of merges or target vocabulary size to be specified externally. Significance-Gain Pair Encoding (SG-BPE) replaces frequency-only selection with a…
